BB Capital Investments acquired a majority stake in Sparkling Society, a developer of games for mobile phones, both parties announced today. The game company from Delft will use the investment to further expand its dominant position within the ‘city building games’ segment.
Sparkling Society was founded in 2013 by Edwin Morren and Mark Peeters. Millions of people worldwide play the games that are being developed in Delft. The goal of a city building game is to develop a piece of land into a flourishing city with ample employment and facilities, to have as many happy citizens as possible.
Number one city building game
“Right from the start it was our goal to go after SimCity’s number one position,” says Creative Director Edwin Morren. “It is super cool to see that we have come so close to realizing that dream so quickly.” Sparkling Society uses the investment to scale up the platform, in order to become a dominant player not only in the United States and Europe, but also in China. “Our strength lies in developing beautiful games for our online community. In BB Capital we have found a strong strategic partner that will support us to keep our ambitious growth targets on the right track,” says CEO Mark Peeters. “We want to triple our turnover in the coming years and see at least two of our games becoming Unicorns*.”
The first game Sparkling Society introduced was City Island in 2013. To date the portfolio contains fifteen games and the game developers from Delft are heading for 100 million downloads in 137 countries. From Africa to South America and from Europe to Japan. The games are available in twenty-four different languages and on all major mobile platforms. The development takes place in close collaboration with Google and a team of artists that builds the various assets within the games. In 2017 their games all together were played for about 1 billion minutes in total, which amounts to no less than 1900 years of game time. Sparkling Society’s earning model is based on in-app purchases and the (video) advertising space offered within their virtual environments.
“Sparkling Society is a company with ambitious, international objectives in a particularly interesting and dynamic sector. In combination with the quality, knowledge and enthusiasm of the management team, we are very pleased to be able to contribute to the growth of Sparkling Society,” says Susan van Koeveringe from BB Capital Investments. The The Hague based investors are specialized in participating in Dutch SMEs with an international focus in various sectors, including education, business services and IT.
